Air Purification Systems
Air purification systems like this i-Wave machine (labeled as an air cleaner) actually clean your air, not just filter it. By ionizing the air, with ions produced by the system, bacteria and viruses become heavier and can be eliminated from the air you breathe.
Benefits of an Air Purification System or Air Ionizer
First, what is an air purification system? This is tricky and if you google the difference between air cleaners and air purifiers you will get contradicting information. Even Wikipedia uses the phrases interchangeably - as if they are one in the same. At Balanced Air Heating and Cooling we try to stick with the terminology used by the manufacturer, but even that has changed over the years. On our website we call this iWave machine an air purifier, even though they market it as an air cleaner. We install the iWave-R, which is actually a residential "air ionization system." As the air flows past the iWave-R, positive and negative ions actively treat the supply air, reducing certain bacteria and viruses in the coil and living space. This ionization process also reduces pet odors, cooking odors, smoke and other particles.
The manufacturer calls this air ionizer an air cleaner. You'll notice the branding on the device refers to it as the iWave-R Residential Air Cleaner. However many HVAC companies refer to it as an air purifier. We also sell and install the AprilAire 2210 and 2410 whole-house air purifiers (formerly called air cleaners by AprilAire).
Air Ionizer
The i-Wave-R is an air ionizer which works by making particulates heavier through the ionization process. Once those particulates are heavier, they're removed from the air. The negative ions used by ionizers can stop the growth of viruses, while the ozone produced by the interaction of negative ions and other particles can kill bacteria, fungi, and mold. So whether you consider it an air cleaner, an air purifier or an air ionizer, the iWave-R is the equipment we install. We also install the AprilAire whole-house air purifiers, with MERV 13 filters, proven to remove common airborne allergens including dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, pet dander, and dust mites. Depending if your concern is about allergens and dust or mold, bacteria and viruses, will determine which system would best fit your need.
